Epidemiology and Surveillance Officer

About the role

The Epidemiology and Surveillance Officer will provide hands‑on technical support, manage staff and oversee epidemiological surveillance strengthening activities for the DOS‑funded STRIDES programme in Indonesia. Working at the provincial level (Banten, West Java and Central Java), the role will collaborate with local ministries, animal health divisions and district livestock services to improve disease detection and surveillance.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to the epidemiology and animal health surveillance component of the STRIDES project in coordination with other technical areas.
• Design and implement event‑based, indicator‑based and community‑based surveillance systems for priority pathogens.
• Prepare training materials, standard operating procedures and job aids; deliver training to epidemiologists, disease surveillance officers and partners.
• Monitor and maintain project protocols, instruments, data sets, manuals and reports.
• Provide technical assistance to national and local counterparts on surveillance strategies, policies and plans for emerging infectious and zoonotic diseases.
• Develop technical briefs, reports and other documentation to support assessments and best‑practice guidelines.
• Analyse project implementation, identify improvement areas and propose technical strategies.
• Deliver onsite and on‑the‑job technical support to build capacity of epidemiologists and related staff.

Required profile

• Experience in epidemiology and animal health surveillance, preferably within Indonesia’s provincial and district livestock services.
• Proven ability to provide field technical support and manage staff in multi‑stakeholder environments.
• Familiarity with developing and updating infectious disease detection and surveillance strategies.
• Strong collaboration skills with government ministries and international programme teams.
