Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will work closely with clients to design, build and maintain backend services that meet their technical and business needs. You will take part in the full development lifecycle, from understanding client requirements and designing technical solutions to implementation, deployment and ongoing support. The role suits a versatile engineer who can quickly learn new systems, communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders and take ownership of high-quality solutions in a client-facing environment.

Key responsibilities

• Work directly with clients to understand requirements and turn them into effective backend solutions.
• Design, develop and improve scalable, secure, reliable and cost-efficient backend services.
• Collaborate with client engineering teams and internal cross-functional teams to deliver projects.
• Understand existing codebases, architectures and technologies quickly.
• Take ownership of significant backend components and technical workstreams.
• Explain technical decisions, trade-offs, risks and recommendations to clients and stakeholders.
• Troubleshoot complex backend and production issues and drive them to resolution.
• Promote engineering best practices and mentor other engineers; lead a team or workstream when asked.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional experience with backend systems using Go, Java or a similar server-side language.
• Extensive experience designing and developing backend services and APIs in production.
• Experience building microservices and cloud applications on AWS or another public cloud.
• Experience building highly scalable services for large numbers of users.
• Experience working with clients or external stakeholders in a technical capacity.
• Strong written and verbal English; agile environment with distributed teams and tight deadlines.
• Proficiency with AI coding assistants is required.
• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, AAA game studio experience, working knowledge of Linux.
